County Border Signs

The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2015 made provision for the erection of traffic signs marking the borders of historic counties. Many such signs have since been erected across the country. The Historic Counties Trust is working with several local authorities on a project to systematically mark historic county borders.

Mayor Ross Patterson presents the Historic Counties Trust with his road signs donation (April 2024). During his year as the ceremonial mayor of Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, Councillor Patterson raised over £14,000 for the erection of historic county roads signs and kindly donated that money to the Historic Counties Trust.

In April 2024, with the cooperation of North Yorkshire Council and Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, this money was used to erect a North Riding of Yorkshire sign on the A167 on Croft.

Ceremonial unveiling of North Riding of Yorkshire sign at Egglestone Abbey Bridge across the River Tees by Cllr Robbie Rodiss, Chairman of Durham County Council (June 2026). With the cooperation of Durham County Council and the Yorkshire Ridings Society, North Riding of Yorkshire and County Durham signs were installed on six crossings of the River Tees in Teesdale.
